How Long Do Drugs Stay in Your Body

The rise of drug-related accidents and deaths has caused an increase in workplace drug tests. Internet search engines have had a lot more searches for how long a particular drug stays in the body. There is no easy answer to that question. Accidents in the workplace is a leading reason for having to take a drug test after the initial hiring drug test. Some employers have even started giving random drug tests to employees in their companies.

Factors That Effect Drug’s Time in the Body

  • Metabolic rate is different for every person. Age plays a significant part in the metabolic rate. Usually, the younger you are, the higher your metabolic rate. The higher the metabolic rate, the faster the drug will move through your body.
  • Body weight can play a couple of different roles in how long a drug will stay in your system. Higher body weight can cause you to have a higher tolerance for a drug, or the fat cells of your body may hold on to the drug longer.
  • Hydration level also determines how long it takes for a drug to move through your system. The more fluids you put through your body, the faster your kidneys and other organs remove waste (aka the drug) through the body.
  • Activity levels can create sweat and organs to push toxins (drugs) out of your system at a faster rate.
  • Drug tolerance is different for every individual. Different drugs react differently in each person system. If there is a built-up tolerance, the drug may react differently depending on how much was taken.
  • Type of user, whether a user is an occasional user or a heavy user, determines how much is built up in their system. A light user’s body may remove the toxins much faster than a heavy user that hasn’t given their system time to move the drugs out of their body.

It is impossible to determine exactly how long a drug can be detected in the body. There are several types of tests such as urine, blood, saliva, and hair tests that each have their own window of detection. It is possible to estimate that window depending on which drug was taken; however, at best it is a guess. Getting false results both positive and negative is possible.
