Rags-to-riches rescue stories tickle opposite ends of the emotional spectrum, causing tears of sadness and tears of joy.  They also restore faith in humanity.  Kim Foster, a volunteer and foster home for Canadian Dachshund Rescue, has a heartbreaking, yet inspirational story that ends with only happy tears.

Gus, a 14-year-old Dachshund, found his way into Canadian Dachshund Rescue’s care.  A good Samaritan found Gus wandering the streets as a stray. He was limp, dehydrated, and barely able to move.  Gus’s savior rushed him to the vet.  Upon examination, the attending veterinarian revealed that Gus was suffering from heat exhaustion, dehydration, and malnourishment.  “It was evident he had been the victim of extreme neglect and was in immense pain.”

All of Gus’s medical issues were treated immediately.  “He was supported through three surgeries and came through each one knowing less and less pain, and more healing and love."  His medical issues meant he wasn't t a candidate for adoption; however, it was decided that he would live out the rest of his life in Kim's home as a CDR sanctuary dog.

Despite all the hardship Gus experienced, he has a new lease on life.  He receives all the unconditional love and care he deserves.  And neglect is nonexistent.

Reflecting on Gus and the journey she's been through with him, Kim says, “I’m so proud to volunteer for a rescue that believes every dog, regardless of their age, deserves a second chance at life.”
